Chelsea was diagnosed at 15 months old with a liver tumor known as hepatoblastoma. She was treated for two years at Dana Farber Boston Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorder Center, with surgery by Dr. Shamberger, followed by radiation and chemotherapy. Chelsea went into remission. However, part of her cancer treatment, which had saved her life, unfortunately caused multiple holes in her colon and organs. Dr. Shamberger had to operate several more times along with Dr. Kim. It was then determined that Chelsea needed a liver transplant.
In August of 2014 she received the phone call that Dr. Kim had a liver for her. Chelsea’s liver transplant surgery was successful! However, during the surgery they found that she had Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC), a rare, incurable cancer.
After Chelseas new diagnosis she received a letter from the family of her liver donor. In this letter she got to know what a wonderful person her liver donor was and wanted to honor her donor by carrying on her motto “Keep smiling, beautiful.”
After all of this, that is when Chelsea met Dr. O’Neill and her nurse practitioner, Casey Wall. Chelsea and her team fought for another two and a half years giving her enough time to meet two of her nieces, Kaylyn and Porter. She also was able to take a few more trips to the beach with her family. Chelsea passed away at home surrounded by her parents, Linda and Deane on January 2nd, 2017 at 26 years old.
Chelseas’ family celebrates her life by raising money for cancer research with a family fun event. Come and have fun by walking or running the 5K or just hangout with friends and family with good food, drinks, live music, MANY raffles and silent auction.
